Ryszard Winiarski was born in 1936 in Lviv. He graduated from the Precision Engineering Faculty at the Warsaw University of Technology (1953–1959), then studied painting at the Warsaw Academy of Fine Arts. His 1966 diploma "Event–Information–Image" formulated a pioneering concept of art based on probability theory and mathematics.
His sole means of artistic expression were black and white squares — equivalents of the mathematical values 0 and 1. Compositions were generated by chance: dice rolls, random number tables, personal algorithms. Winiarski was the leading figure of indeterminism in Polish art — a contemporary of Roman Opałka.
His works are held in MOCA Los Angeles, the Museum of Art in Łódź, the National Museums in Warsaw, Kraków, Wrocław and Poznań, the Zachęta Gallery, and the Wilhelm-Hack-Museum in Ludwigshafen. São Paulo Biennale (1969, 1971), Constructivist Biennale Nuremberg. Jan Cybis Prize 1996.
